The Ville Platte Rotary Club today (Tuesday) heard from well known University of Louisiana-Lafayette Baseball Coach Tony Robichaux.

Coach Robichaux who has gotten more than 1000 victories in his career, explained to member of the rotary club how difficult it is for a team in Division One baseball to start as one of 307 teams to make it to the World Series where 8 teams are invited in Omaha. Last year, UL made it to the Super Regional with LSU, one tournament away from making it to the World Series.

He also shared how difficult it is to convince young players to stay in college rather than for the allure and promise of the major league. He said recruiters will offer the young players a signing bonus which is very tempting to skip college. The bonus money tempts many young players however only about three percent  recruited actually play in the major leagues. Most stay in the minor league making only $1100 a month and not playing six months out of the year.

Coach Robichaux was the special guest of Rotarian Dr. Joey Soileau.

In other business, Club President Mitch Fontenot reminded Rotarians that a fellowship gathering is set for October 20 at the Cazan Lodge.
